I needed a decent photo for my new passport and identity card. And who knows, it became a CSTMC recreation activity! Lani, Bak Kia, Kenneth, Gary (from NUS Toastmasters Club), Chay Buay and her daughter, Wei Ping were present to do the makeover. We had fun with Bak Kia pretending to be our news anchor in shorts and slippers, Lani and myself posing as wives of a Mafia group, and everyone chipped in to ensure everyone looks presentable for the photo shoot! *Claps* Some of us used our photos for resumes, Facebook profile and even as a trial for their dinner and dance! Thank you all for making this event so successful and enjoyable. =) See you again for the next makeover!

After much enticement from Chang Hu I decided to join the group to watch the soccer game at Cheng San CC! I am not a football fan but after watching Japan versus Paraguay, my mindset has changed. I was not only there for the game but also for the excitement of watching it with close to 600 pax! In the end Paraguay won because of the penalty kicks. Sigh. Our hopes of having an Asian team in the finals have gone down the drain. However, Japan's defence tactic was strong. Nevertheless it was an amazing match between the two teams. We had fun watching the coaches breaking in sweat and tears. The whole crowd cheering and clapping when each team almost scored a goal during the 90minutes.

Thank you all who were there... Chang Hu for organising, Kenneth, Tricia, Bak kia, Lani, myself haha... Henry and Leslie who were there to keep for crowd control.

The retreat ended less than an hour ago, I am still overwhelmed with strong emotions. I do not think writing one whole essay can spell out everything that had happened between 3pm to 11.30pm. Although it is already my 5th Retreat since it started in 2005/2006, there is always something new to be learnt. New friendships forged because of our heart-to-heart listening. The attendance is great! Thank you Daryl, Shenoy (not in photo), Cheng Lin, Kenneth, Shirley, Chay Buay, Venkat, Lani, Bak Kia, Chang Hu, Esther, Fui Long and Shirley. I love you all... =) See you guys on Wed for the Installation Night!!!

The last issue for the Newsletter took quite a while to collate because of the requests for congratulatory notes and articles from current and former Presidents of Cheng San. It was well worth it because the final production looks fantastic! Thanks to Albert who has diligently formatted everything for us, Ben for taking such good photos, Guan Hau and Esther for editing.

Looking through the past blog entries certainly brought back fond memories of the time spent in and out of the club. This blog, multiply site and official website are all possible because of members who recognised the importance to reaching out to public through this medium. Thank you - Esther who founded this blog, Lani who set up the multiply photo site, Daniel kick started the website.

First-Timer Evaluation Workshop

Yet another fruitful day at Cheng San Toastmasters Club. Although I have been in the club for more than 6 years, I am humbled by this experience at the First-Timers Evaluation Workshop. We never had this during "my time". And having to see the enthusiam from the members in learning a new skill is heartening. New members - Sam, Bak Kia, Venkat, Ben and Slyvia had their fair share of practising their skills. Xin Hong is an experienced member but it's also his first try at doing an evaluation. Well done to all. Many thanks to Lani, Chay Buay, Daniel and Wendy who were there to mentor the freshies. Of course, thank you to our trainer, Albert Chan for his efforts in conducting this workshop. If you have benefited from this workshop, do sign up as an evaluator for the next chapter meeting.

Ushering the New Year

Our Club President, Daniel Kwek has made us write down our Toastmasters resolutions for the term 2009/10. Do you still remember what they are? And have you tried your best to fulfill them?

I remember mine was to take up appointments whenever I attend club meetings and to organise at least 1 activity each month. Hmm... guilty as charged for not doing the first, however the PR team tries our best to do the latter. We look forward to planning more fun-filled and educational activities for the next 6 months before we usher in the new term.

"It's going to rain only at 6 O'clock!"

This was Ivana's promise as we head towards Ubin on the bumboat on a cloudy morning. My last visit to Ubin was 6 years back during my University days. Stepping on the island once again brought back sweet memories of being a student going on a treasure hunt and trying to avoid ghostly entities.

Ubin is in essence, the last village in Singapore. A peddling through the rustic roads of Ubin takes you back to Singapore in the 1960's with the simpler pleasures of life. Some viewed Ubin as a mosquitoes feasted island and its favourite delicacies were the island’s visitors. However, as we cycled towards Chek Jawa, we were greeted by military commandos and Ubin Volunteers who were preparing for the arrival of the APEC guests. The trail was peppered with unforeseen road obstacles but everyone pressed on before we stopped for some coconut drinks and to marinate ourselves with sunblock. And when we were hungry, we went to our "Kachang Puteh" Mingcai for some tidbits who also provided us with loads of entertainment along the way. Of course, how can we forget about the photo-taking whereever we went? Ben was our official photographer and did I mention he is also a potential Man-hunt model? It was a fantastic nature cycling trail as we managed to catch the mini mudcrab migrating, the Nipah also known as "Attap Chee", jelly fish and wild boars! It was indeed a very enjoyable getaway from the hustling and bustling life on mainland Singapore.

On top of our Great Singapore Nature Trail, we went on our Great Singapore Makan Trail! Alike the Taiwan food tasting entertainment television series, we took a bus from Changi Point to Geylang Lorang 35 for the 24 hours daily Bean curd store and back tracked to the famous fermented toufu at the junction of Geylang road and Katong! It was an amusing sight watching Tricia trying the toufu for the every first time and downing barley water to kill the stinky breath. To save time, we took a bus to Lorong 18 where we tried to catch a glimpse of the shady red-light district. To our surprised, we were tailed by a mentally disturbed man who wanted to befriend me! Who else was to save the day other than our President, Daniel Kwek? He walked up to the man and scared him off with a glare and a baritone voice warning him to stay away. Our hero was rewarded with a plate of spicy stingray and a delicious frog leg’s porridge as Mingcai re-enacted the whole scene telling us he was so ready to teach that senile man a lesson if Daniel has not bravely come to the rescue.

At the end of the day, Tricia was a bit toasted from the sun. Daniel became a hero. Ivana's weather forecast came true. Mingcai was the ultimate entertainment provider. Ben was our security officer making us feel safe and secure. And I felt like I have gone through an unsuccessful weight lost programme, but it felt absolutely fantastic.

Thank you Ben and Mingcai for organising this outing and making us feel so safe throughout the trip. Never forget Ben’s slogan: Your Worries are Our Concern.

If you haven't been able to attend chapter meetings regularly, don't feel left out. The door to Cheng San Toastmasters Club is always open for you!

Here's a snapshot of the chapter meeting, by our dear VPE, Fui Long.

Thanks to Tricia for taking up the roles of TME with many last minutes changes and disruptions, she pulled through despite physically drained with so many recessions going on at work. I knew she wanted to polish her mastering-the-ceremony skills, indeed she had grown and discovered many more opportunities for improvements through yesterday's session. Tired, Tough and Tremendous effort! Hi Tricia, Cheng San will always be a place for you to DE-STRESS and BE AFFIRMED!

Thanks to all the speakers, Ming Cai, Ronald, Daryl for putting the effort to prepare for the speeches. Daryl made us clearer that we were blessed to live in Singapore. Ronald, the BEST Speaker, certainly prompted us to check our Type of Output in the toilet! Ming Cai, for rushing over to chapter meeting after work to tell us a story that touched us.

Thanks to Lani coordinating the Table Topics session with the theme "I Love SPORE". And Mr. Table Topic was Guan Hau again....with SAM telling us why SIA was a great way to fly. Kumar on why Singapore would not win world cup, Xin Hong on why Singapore is an ideal home and Ivana looking forward to opening of the IR but not the Casino.

We all benefitted from our newly appointed Resident Language Evalutor Sylvia Ang who lead us to "PLEDGE" the WORD OF THE EVENING. We also learned that "ZERO" is not "GERO". Well Done!
While we were having fun, we missed Albert(staying at home), Cheng Lin(busy), Shuling(down with fever) and Chay Buay(staying back at office till late evening....., Steven Sim (busy at work) and many of you not here with us.

The next meeting will be on 26 Aug 2009. It will be the birth of 2 Cheng San Champions! Please be here to celebrate! See ya!

One People, One Nation, One Singapore... It is a joyous occasion for all as the Cheng San residents celebrated National Day @ Blk 504. I was invited to be the host for this important event!

It's amazing how things are different when you are on stage facing 1500 people.

The professionals have to handle not only the crowd but also coordinating with the organisers, the sound systems and making sure that they engage the audience! A rehearsal and microphone testing is always a must in order for the programme to run smoothly!

I was not nervous in particular when I stood on stage, however, it's the reading of the recipients names that got me uptight as I was handed the name list 5 minutes before going on stage! I am pretty complacent when it comes to hosting a Toastmasters Chapter meeting. However, for a National event like this, we have to think on our feet; joke, sing songs and just continue talking in order to stall for time! Nevertheless I had friends from Cheng San Toastmasters Club, who encouraged me throughout the programme. I even got tips from the professional emcee, Adrian from That's Innovative! How lucky I was! Then of course I had the honour of taking photos with our Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Information, Communications and the Arts. and Advisor for Cheng San-Seletar GRC, Dr Balaji Sadasivan!

It was a once in a life time experience. I would like to give special thanks to our Cheng San Community Centre Management Committee Chairman, Henry Tan and CSTMC Club advisor, Leslie Yong for the dinner invitation. And Special people - Daniel, Sylvia, Lani, Fui Long, Han Wen, Simin, Hwee Ling, Hung Bin and Hung Jui for the 110% support!

The Cycling Trail

It has been quite a long while since Cheng San TMC had a sports event. Thanks to our 2 new members -- Ben and Mingcai, they took the initiative to organise a cycling trip, and it was indeed a good workout!

Our starting point was at East Coast Park, and we finished at Changi Beach Park. According to Ben, the total distance is about 16km! To cycle that amount of distance is no mean feat, but we did it with a few resting sessions in between by taking lots of photos. We had fun while doing it and we certainly had a good time! Ben took the opportunity to pose for the camera, making shots professional enough to be printed out as Calendar shots. Let's just say... the ladies were real lucky that evening! To end the evening, we had some nice and cheap hawker food at Changi Village Food Centre. Local fares like Nasi Lemak, Roti John, Maggi Goreng, bbq Stingray, Satay and the thirst-quenching Sugar Cane juice were ordered and we ate to our heart's content. Yum... what a great way to end it off!

*Drums roll please!* I present to you the Executive Committee for 2009/2010 led by In-coming President Daniel Kwek! After 5 years in Cheng San Toastmasters Club, this Installation Night was one of the most heart-warming session ever. We presented a "thank you" gifts to all our "Friends of Cheng San" which serve to recognise efforts of external guests in making our chapter meeting a success. They include, Rebecca Lee, Lim Seh Leng, Richard Sng, Wong Kok Wah, Thomas Tan, Kenneth Wee, David Kow, Micheal Wee and Chong Cheng Lee. At the same time, thanks to our President Mentor, Seow Hwee Ling, we managed to invite our former members, Low Lu Lu, Henry Tan and Hendry Lim back to give a give an impromptu speech of their experience in Cheng San. Special thanks goes out to our Advisor, Leslie Yong for installing our new team and everyone who made tonight a success.

We also had our ex-member, Eileen Tan who visited the club and she is always remembered as our Cheng San Toastmasters Chef.

Monopoly... the Malaysia version is known as Millionaire.

Gamers include Lani, Daniel, Hanwen, Simin (Hanwen's girlfriend) and myself. 2 hours into the game Hanwen declared bankrupt after paying Daniel, the landlord, $20,0000 RM! Lani and myself fell into 3rd and 2nd place. Afterwhich we had a light dinner and was caught in the rain for a while. Our dear Hanwen revealed that his workplace was only 5minutes away from his current home! *Envious* When we got back, it was "wii" time! Some of them were playing the game set for the very first time and gave their best shot at "Raving Rabbids" a family-oriented and kinestatically challenged game played by up to 4 players. Even after a few drinks (sponsored by Lani), we were still sobre and worked out a sweat at some of the "Rabbids" dance moves. Finally, after several rounds of dancing competition, Hanwen emerged as the Dancing King! It was a cosy group and we had plenty of fun. Thank you Hanwen and Simin for being such generous hosts.

The month of December is not only the festive season, but also the season of love! On 10th December 2008, many of us had gathered at Paramount Restaurant to celebrate this special occasion with Shuling. Its the day that Shuling and Marcus tied the knot. For years that we have all heard her speaking about Marcus during her table topics, it was truly heartwarming to see them wedded. Especially more so since the JP was our dearest club advisor, Leslie Yong.
As for me, I had the honour to help out as the co-Emcee.

Power Presentation - The Subtle Way Part II

Yet another successful and enriching workshop by our speaker, CC, CL, Ronald Lim. The lesson for the day was the usage of chiasmus, a form of antitheses, in our speeches. The session was indeed informative and interesting with Han Wen tossing out ideas which can be used for marketing buffet lunches, "Eat all you can! Can you eat all?"

To reinforce session, we encouraged participants to write down table topics with the use of chiasmus. There were plenty of bright sparks who had lots of ideas flowing that marked an early Valentine's Day celebration at Cheng San TMC, with love-related topics. The topics include: Ask not what love can do for you but what you can do for love. And, Do you love to regret of regret not loving? The timing sequence for the table topics went slightly haywired and some enjoyed V.I.P status with double the talk time. And that's what we call maximising your membership fees in the club. The exposure and knowledge gained from these workshops serve us well because they are fun and we will certainly rememeber and apply them in our speeches.

Thank you so much Daniel, Shui Sheng, Yin Jie, Shenoy, Ronald, Manoj, Hwee Ling, Fui Long, Han Wen, Chay Buay, Tricia, and Shuling for attending this workshop. A huge thanks to Ronald who has volunteered to do this workshop for the development of our members. He is definitely an example for us to emulate. As quoted from an audience today:

The workshop was conducted by 2 experienced Toastmasters. The first segment was conducted by CC, CL, Wu Shuling. She taught us on making the right visual impression - how we look, dress, and present would speak volumes about us. This was followed by our language perfectionist, CC, CL, Ronald Lim, who shared with us on how to create an impact by using anthithesis in our speeches. The presentations by these 2 powerful speakers impressed and empowered 20 listeners. To teach is a passion, but to learn is in fashion. Tonight, we had a passionate fashion display, because in Cheng San Toastmasters Club we grow in unison. From the overwhelming response, there shall be a part two to the workshop soon!

Yesterday we had several guests with us, including 16 foreign students from Raffles Institution.

The evening was packed with guests!

Some students attempted table topics. As a form of encouragement, we presented a First Timer Ribbon to them.

Appointment Holders' Tips (Part 2 of 8)

Appointment holders' Tips (Part 1 of 8) talked about being the timer.

Let's move on to talk about the Ah Counter.

Of course, the Ah Counter is not required to check the mouths of Toastmasters... AHHHHH!

So what does the Ah Counter do?

The Ah Counter counts the number of pause fillers every speaker makes. Erm (that counts one.), you know what I mean.

How do they go about doing it?

There is currently an A3-sized booklet in the cupboard for the recording. It has the list of all our members' names, as well as the pause fillers, and boxes for you to tick off.

1. Get the booklet, put down the names of guests or visiting Toastmasters who are at the meeting, and record their pause fillers too. The introduction at the start of the meeting is a good way to get all their names.

2. Start recording when the SAA kick starts the meeting. Some of us have the misconception that the recording only starts when the project speeches begin.

3. Recording only ends after the language evaluation.

4. You also may want to give a brief explanation of the Ah Counter before reporting.

Eg. The purpose of the Ah Counter is to allow us to be more aware of the pause fillers that we make, because too many pause fillers can be distracting.

5. When reporting,
- Say the name of the person
- Say the specific category of the pause fillers
- State the number of pause fillers in that category
- State the total number of pause fillers for the person

Eg. Andy had 5 ahs, 3 okays, 7 you knows and 9 so's. Total 24. (Huh? So many ah? - that counts another 2.)

6. Should we be running overtime, only report the total number of pause fillers for each person.

7. Remind all members to pay 10 cents per pause filler, to a maximum cap of $2. Guests and visiting Toastmasters are exempted!

8. You will collect the money individually from each member. (OWE $$ PAY $$.)

9. Pass the total and the ah counter booklet to the treasurer, Shui Sheng or Han Wen who will initial and record as petty cash.

Petty cash in our club goes to buying refreshments. So eat your fill because you are paying for it!

Division 'S' Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest

On the 19th of October, Daniel, Tricia, Hwee Ling, Cheng Lin, Esther decided to spend their Saturday at Tampines Changkat CC for a day of learning from the best speakers and evaluators in Division 'S'.

Indeed there was a tough fight between the speakers and evaluators. As for Ronald who represented Cheng San TMC and Area S1 in the evaluation contest, he put up a tough fight although he did not emerge as the top 3. Nonetheless, having been able to compete at the division level is always a learning experience.

Do you know that besides speakers and evaluators, appointment holders hold a great deal of importance in the chapter meetings?

But who are these appointment holders, what do they do and how do they go about doing it?

Appointment Holders (Part 1 of 8) is here to explain.

The first appointment to be explained: The Timer

What do they do?

The timer keeps track of the timing of all speakers for the chapter meeting.

The timer has 3 main responsibilities:

1) To time each speech/evaluation
2) To keep a timer's record for all speeches
3) To report the timings of each speech after the segment

The timer is endowed with the follow to help them:
1) A stopwatch (A digital one, not an analog one shown above, we very high-tech ok!)
2) A timing device with green, amber and red lights
3) A bell (TING TING!)

The general sequence is as follows: Light the green, amber and red light and then ring the bell. The timings of when the lights come on depend on the speeches. The bell will always sound 30 seconds after the red light is switched on.

How do they go about doing it?

For every speaker, there is an allocated time.

The timer will start timing:
1) at the first sound the speaker makes
2) at the first gesture made by the speaker
3) when the speaker begins to use a prop

After each speech, write down the time down on the timer's record sheet for each speaker/evaluator.

When reporting, say the name of the speaker, followed by the timing.

Example: Jane took 4 minutes and 50 seconds. Tom took 6 minutes and 21 seconds. Wayne took 7 minutes and 3 seconds.

Next, report the speakers who are eligible to be voted. If the speaker has spoken till the bell rang, then he/she is ineligible to be voted.

WHAT IF THE SPEAKER REFUSES TO STOP SPEAKING AFTER THE BELL RINGS?

(Throw the stopwatch at him! Just kidding, lah.)

After the bell is rung 30 seconds after the red light is switched on, ring the bell once for every extra minute spoken as a reminder that his/her time is up.

THE RATIONALE?

In Toastmasters, we respect everybody's time and the extra time should not be taken up since everyone should get a chance to speak.

This short trip encompassed so many fun activities which brought us all together; good meals, shopping, massage, karaoke, swimming and pool game! We did all that within 1.5 days! Special thanks going out to Daniel Kwek and Han Wen who made sure we were all entertained throughout the trip and brought us safely home.

Ah... after a loooong day.

It's time to pamper us with a face mask.

We started this self-funded Exco Retreat 2 years ago and I have always enjoyed every minute of it. This year is not an exception and there were more activities~! We had a personality test and set our values for the term (For the "B" people), had Fun (For the "E"), built cameraderie (For "Ss") in a very well orchestrated manner ("T" this is for you)! After that we proceeded to Far East Plaza for our dinner we held a mini birthday celebration for Guan Hau! Happy Birthday! Last of all a very intimate sharing session where we practise listening with our ears and heart. I certainly hope that we'll continue to have such retreat as many years as possible because it simply helps everyone on a personal as well as at a club level.

Special thanks going out to Fuilong for conducting the class, Esther for organizing it, Ronald for booking the room @ Royal Plaza on Scotts and everyone who has participated in this event.

Division S International Speech and Table Topics Contest @ AIA Changi 26 April 2008
The turnout was surprising low, and we realised that it was because 2 other divisions in Singapore was holding their contests as well. As usual, Cheng San contributed the most number of supports in a single club… WHOA!

The people who were there including the contestants were Shuling, Albert, Hwee Ling, Cliff, Lani, Shenoy, Hung Jui, Regina, Fuilong, Wee Jee, Chay Buay, Esther, Daniel, Ronald and Guan Hau. A total of 15!

Guan Hau was 1st runner up in the International Speech contest. Congratulations! This was no mean feat as he was in a field of giants which included a past district champion, Benjamin Cheng, the AIA dynamo, Mohd Hijazi, and the 1st District Governor and veteran DTM, Gae Ban Peng.
Ronald was unplaced but he thought he provided the best laughs of the day. Huh?! What “tudes”, the only one I know is You-tube. Anyway, the killer table topic was "Altitude, Aptitude, Attitude".

Nancy, I hope you are feeling better already.

Ha, it's really time to spring clean this blog. Can't clean on the first day, so here I am.

It's the 7th day of Chinese New Year, have you ate, gambled and visited a fair bit? Well, if you haven't, you can come and toss 'yu sheng' during our chapter meetings. But no gambling please. This chapter meeting, we will be tossing the 'yu sheng'.

Year end always seem to be a popular time of the year for couples to get married, isn't it?

Well well well, our dear President, Ronald, finally got married on 3rd December. On behalf of Cheng San Toastmasters Club, let me wish you a blissful marriage! 白头偕老，永结同心，儿孙满堂，多子多福。。。 okay should be enough of auspicious greetings. Yes Ronald, I remembered one of your dreams is to become a full-time father. Before that happens, you gotta work at it. *wink wink*

So as always, toastmasters gather to talk, toast (oh we finally really do real toasting, since we are called 'toastmasters'...what irony!), eeeat and take pictures!

Not all the pictures are with me so make do with the current collection first alright? The rest of the members, remember to upload the pictures to here and only here.
Its easier to manage the whole collection. I know a couple of you have feedback that you can't view the pictures in multiply.com . I have no idea why, I'm sorry I can't solve this technical problem as I am no IT expert. So the best I can do is to post all photos here on this blog.

CSTMC-RC November Outing

November gathering was held at Orchard Hotel to have afternoon tea. The main organiser, Lani, decided that everyone had to bring along 1 childhood photo to have a mini competition. The cutest photo wins!

CSTMC Recreational Club October Outing

For October, CSTMC-RC organised a small gathering at Oilio Dome(Bishan CC). It was coffee-talk and... none-stop yakking.

And since Esther wasn't around because she just came back from Malaysia on that same day, Shuling snapped a picture with Daniel eating his Sundae to tempt her.

Daniel is a lucky chap, left with Cliff Teo, and right with Lani. 左拥右抱！

Hung Jui saw a pretty lady walked past while taking picture, look at his happy face! But he wasn't looking at the camera, gotta re-take!

District 80 Semi-Annual Convention 2007

With laser lights and musical fountain by the beach at Songs of the Sea, Toastmasters' District 80 Semi-Annual Convention started unofficially with oohs and ahhs as delegates from Hong Mong, Macau, Singapore and Thailand were mesmerized by the beauty of Sentosa at night. Dinner by the seaside also brought our moods to the highest.

The next day with a loud bang, the open ceremony commenced with its guest-of-honour Mr Tharman Shamugaratnam and keynote speaker, Michael Podolinsky. The premium that morning was the keynote speaker, speaking on 6 disciplines and 6 barriers. If you did not feel inspired and motivated in that hour or so, then I don't know what will. After a buffet-style lunch, fellow Toastmasters adjourned to their respective venues for three concurrent workshops. With another dose of Podolinsky and hearing from speakers like Ezzy Wang & Stuart Tan, as drained as I was, the many lessons to be learnt and applied made it up for the tiredness.

The highlight for the 2nd night was the Gala Dinner with its theme of "Simply a Superstar Night". Besides good food, good performances, Toastmasters also rewarded various leaders, divisions and clubs for their hardwork in the previous term. What can be more apt than calling it the 'Hall of Fame'? With great educational workshops, talks, dinner and camadarie, I went home, looking forward to another day of yet great fun.

The third and final day commenced at 8.30am with the humourous speech and evaluation contests. It was a fierce fight between the contestants. Surprise surprise, we even had Ramesh Muthusamy as the test speaker. Difficult to evaluate? You bet. Then the convention came to a close with the closing ceremony and a farewell lunch outdoors.

To sum it up, conventions can easily make up for a few years of chapter meetings. The inspiration and motivation within Toastmasters, within me, were further enhanced with the convention. Each convention is a unique experience. This is my 2nd convention, with the 3rd to come next year. Join me, fellow Toastmasters, it's truly an eye-opener.

The thing(s) EXCO does

We all meet on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays for our chapter meetings. But do you know that the EXCO comes back on the every 1st Wednesday of each month to meet, plan and discuss things for our club?

So besides the usual meeting in November, we also geared up to re-arrange our REALLY MESSY cupboard. And ta-da, our cupboard is once again neat and tidy. But we really wonder how long will it last. Haha.

If you would like to chip in and join us in the EXCO next term starting from July 2008, please join us during our EXCO meeting on every 1st Wednesdays of every month, at 7.30pm, at the room next to the conference room at Cheng San CC.

HSBC TreeTop Walk @ MacRitchie

Over a nice Saturday on 11 August 2007, some Cheng San-ians decided to conquer the tree top walk and get some exercise...

Look at everyone's fresh faces in the morning...

We met some squirrels and monkeys at the beginning. The squirrels were to fast, the monkeys were slower, but they seemed to know I was taking a shot, they were about to go off...

Then the gruelling trail started... What seemed like never-endinggggggggggggggggggggggggg.

Until like an hour, we only hit the 1km mark...

After what seemed like another hour, with steep descends and ascends, we hit the 1.5km mark.

And some more walking and perspiring, the 2.0km mark.

And halfway point, 2.5km more to the treetop walk...

And finally, the sign came to us.

And the trail & hike continues...

It's demoralising I tell you, you imagine you keep walking and what you see is a never-ending path.

This was the ranger station where we all took a little break. By this time, we were letting the chicken rice lunch to motivate us to finish the trail.

And finally, the entrance!!!!!! Shuling was almost attacked by a guarding monkey at the hanging bridge... Haha, luckily there was the ranger to help us scare it away...

As we were exiting MacRitchie, raindrops fell, and we took a cab to the famous kampong chicken rice stall and indulged in ice-cold drinks while waiting for Cliff, Roy & Gek Choo whom joined us for lunch.

Hung Jui was expected to come for lunch. But too bad he was caught up with work. Well Hung Jui, you missed out some good people and good food!

Shuling suggested a Cheng San Toastmasters Recreation Club, with sports activities each month. So Cheng San-ians, join us next time!

Installation Night Photos (II)

Hello people, the 2nd batch of photos are finally here! Well, blogger just completed her exams and had a well-deserved rest.

Here is the continuation of the photos from part 1. From here, we see the start of the installation night proper, with the president's opening address. It is quite an emotional speech, Shuling almost teared...

But seriously, don't we all agree that she did a wonderful job in her term? Excellent superb job, President Shuling!

Then Shuling gave out little appreciation hand-made gifts. Yes, female presidents have more of such little things of cards and gifts. First to Selvi, our SAA.

Then to senior Hwee Ling and a hug...

Following that to Hung Jui, VPM and a kiss on the cheek!!

So you see why Daniel's expression is like that. He wanted a kiss too! Forgot whether he got it, camera too slow to catch. Haha! Lucky you Daniel! But Shuling gave every female a kiss!

Then to me!! A hug and a kiss too! Oh, I got this little hammer made of clay from Shuling, it's a symbol of power and advised to use it wisely. Great gift with great meaning. Thank you Shuling! It's on display in the cupboard.

Next to Ronald, a hug too... A well deserved hug to her goodie assistants of EXCO that term.

Then the photographer digressed and took a picture of Hung Jui.

After the opening address was Shenoy's speech. He did his project 10 and helped Cheng San achieved it's PERFECT 10 DCP goals! Congratulations to CC Gaja Shenoy!

Then next it was to discharge the outgoing exco. To do that, we had past-LGET and present DG Michael Wee to do so.

Fernando Young, past-Area S1 Governor and Present Division S Governor helped to give out certificates of appreciation to the outgoing exco.

Here are the photos that people have been anticipating!!

Cheng San Toastmasters Club had its installation night on the 27 June 2007, where the outgoing EXCO gets discharged from their duties, and the incoming EXCO gets officially installed as the club officers...

There are about 100+ photos, of which I already have 50+, trying to put it all at one go will kill the blogger, so here's the first part, during the buffet dinner...

This was when everyone was busy eating their first round...

Then we like to snap people who are in action... *Snigger snigger* But we serve good food alright!

Then the communication and chatting starts. In toastmasters, we learn communication skills, both speaking and listening, so chatting is a good way to start, and you get to build up your social network.

Since Albert came back after such a long time, I decided to just spend one more minute to post another photo of him. WELCOME BACK ALBERT!

A glimpse into our EXCO retreat

Cheng San TMC's incoming exco had a self-funding exco retreat on the 23 June 2007 at the Pan Pacific Hotel. The pictures taken in the hotel room has not come into my hands yet, these are the ones I have, those outside the room.

After a fruitful retreat from 2pm-10pm, which the photos will come in another post, Lani, Ronald, Daniel, Hung Jui and Esther went for supper at Makansutra.

Last chapter meeting of term 2006/07

We had our last chapter meeting of the term 2006/07 on 13 June 2007. It was a 'spot'. Ok, 'Spot' was the theme of our meeting that night.

This is the Toastmasters of the Evening (TME), Esther, which is me, lah. What you see on the board is the word of the day 'contravene' which is given by the language evaluator.

This was our external speaker from Toastmasters Club of Singapore, Jackie. He was doing his project 10. Congratulations on achieving your competent communicator award!

This is Fui Long, who scared the wits out of everyone by pretending to say that he did not prepare for his speech. Anyway, Fui Long did his project 10 as well.

During break time while everyone was outside enjoying some refreshments, Seh Leng from Brilliant Advanced and Ulu Pandan Toastmasters Club was preparing her evaluation segment. See how hardworking our regular visitor is! She posed for 2 pictures though.

I think everyone was too engrossed in listening that the photographer only caught one evaluator in action. The next person here is Kumar, the table topics master.

And to digress again, the photograpther took a picture of Lani and Daniel. Hmm... They were doing their appointments. Haha, don't slack on your appointment 'cause you may be caught in action! Haha~

This is Daniel, whose humourous part of him triggers off when he does a table topic. How often do you see him in that pose?

The photographer digresses again, to take a picture of Wee Jee and Fui Long, husband and wife. Wee Jee is not a member but she supports Fui Long a lot and attends our outings and dinners.

This is Saddiq, our external language evaluator from Temasek Polytechnic Toastmasters Club. He is our regular visitor too!

The next table topic was attempted by Shirley, who has been away in Jakarta to teach there. She's back for a short hiatus, and she came for our chapter meeting! Welcome back Shirley!

This is Joe Han, a guest who volunteered to take up a table topic. He's a natural, really! You should have seen him in action.

Then Zhi Rong, a guest as well, decided to take up the challenge of the table topic. See him looking at the topic~

After some thoughts, he managed to speak for 2 minutes about his NS life on the ship.

So you see, joining Cheng San Toastmasters Club allows you to listen to others and their experiences! Zhi Rong's mini-speech was interesting, or rather at least to me.

Next Selvi came and spoke about her job as a supervisor in the hotel industry, you should listen to what she has to say and her dreams of becoming a hotelier. She might be a big boss one day, ok!

Then Wendy came up for a table topic as well~ Haha, what's fun about table topics is you always get unexpected topics at times. So it's up to you to think on your feet, speak off the cuff and twise the topic to make it your own.

Some practice keeps you in shape for impromptu speaking, especially when you get a tough question from your boss/girlfriend/wife etc etc...

Then Cher Kim from Toastmasters Club of Singapore also took up a table topic.

Then came the awards presentation... The best table topic speaker...

And congratulations to Fui Long who got his CC award!

The closing address then ends the chapter meeting nicely.

Last gathering of the term 2006/2007

Barbeque seemed the best choice for the toasties since we love to talk, needed a place to talk, and some good food to go along. So when Roy & Gek Choo offered to let us have our bbq at their humble abode at Old Upper Thomson Road, what more can we ask for?

This was the beginning when the food was ready, everyone was busy eating so nobody posted for a picture...

After some food comes some chit-chatting, so nobody to pose for camera yet...

See when people's tummies are filled, like Hung Jui's, he starts to pose and act cute and handsome! Haha!

Then we took a picture of Ronald and his wife-to-be, Regina. Sorry I can't spell (fiance), or rather I'm not sure if it's correct. Anyway, see the love birds! Awwwwwwwwww....

Then Hung Jui comes along, to have a share in the photo!

Kumar, who was in charge of the food that night, finally decided to pose for a picture! See how cute he was? *Get me a plastic bag!*

See suddenly people disappear from the table! Anyway, these 2 are Roy's and Gek Choo's relatives! They came to join in the fun too!

Oh, there they are! Hiding over the other side to secretly have the good food! Haha~. That's Daniel & Selvi. Selvi's a soft spoken lady. She's really nice and committed to Cheng San ok! Don't pray pray!

So both of us were full and decided to fool around with the fan. Kumar said that I looked better with my face covered. Really? Come on, say I'm pretty!!

Then came some children, who were more interested in lighting up the staircase leading to the house. You shall see the master piece later.

This is Adrian, if I remembered his name correctly. He helped us out with bbq-ing the food. The food's good, the cook's good, the crowd's good, Cheng San TMC is definitely good can.!

Ok, I decided to put this picture up because Ivana has been MIA for several months. Then we all were enlightened when we knew she went back to her hometown for a short hiatus. Welcome back Ivana!

This was what was left when we took the next picture! The pot of rice was the second pot, and all the food were gone! See, it's really good food! And for the first time, no diahorrea for me. I always get the watery runs after EVERY bbq, except this one! Good standard eh?

This was when the adults were having the alcoholic drinks. Well, I had a sip and I felt drunk. Ok, that was exaggerrated, but ya, I'm a good kid! From left, Hung Jui, Hwee Ling, Eileen!

Ok, Hung Jui again! Taking pictures with girls. He got so excited when he heard from Hwee Ling (to the right) about the girls Hwee Ling met at the Hong Kong Convention. I think he is thinking of holding dual membership.

Ok, see! I told you I look better without the fan! And the girl to the right is Lani, the photographer. There's another photographer, Shuling, but the photos are not in my hands yet. So make do with these ok? Anyway, thank you Lani for taking the shots!

So when the chit-chatting was more or less getting a lil' boring, then it's games time! We played taboo. It started off with us playing outside, but it got a lil cramped with more people joining in. Then we moved indoors.

When we were indoors with the air con (ahhhhh..)

We all had a go at Taboo, with the squeaker and timer, haha, it was hilarious!

Halfway through the game, some food on the plate came, we were supposed to eat it, but we were too engrossed in the game so you see the unpeeled potatoes.

We were more or less finished with the Taboo 256 cards, so we just sat around to chit chat, again! Come on, we are toasties, we like to talk, or at least Cheng San Toasties like to talk to each other.

It was about 10pm and people were getting tired from all the good fun, good food and fun people... See the expressions...

Then we went to take a group photo. We were in process of lining up....

The group photo will come soon and I'll upload. If you feel like you missed out some good fun, well fret not! Because another gathering will soon come. Cheng San TMC has pretty regular gatherings apart from chapter meetings.

Like, we hold workshops and aspiring trainers get to train as part of their trainings.

Fui Long and Ronald below were the trainers for the Cheng San- Seletar CCMC workshop.

Of course, you get to help out as facilitator, or if not, you can just observe and get free enrichment! Ain't that good?

Apart from making speeches, we have speech contests, club level, area level, division level up to district and international levels. Your speeches don't just end at our CC conference room, you get to go on and win reputation and trophies for yourself!

We also attend semi-annual conventions. Semi-annual conventions last 3 days inclusive of speech contests, champion speakers speaking and various other workshops conducted by Toastmasters who are trainers by profession.

Like what I said, Cheng San Toastmasters Club is not only retricted to speeches and boring people or old people. The youngest in the club is only 20, and that's me, posting blog entries here.

Cheng San TMC AGM

Cheng San Toastmasters Club had it's 18th AGM on 23rd May 2007.

We had an induction ceremony, but only Lani was there. Following that we reviewed the 2006/2007 AGM minutes and went through the secretary's and treasurer's report.

Then after we elected our 2007/2008 EXCO!

Results are out but one post is still open. Will announce the whole list of EXCO when all positions are filled.

Speech contest + Gathering!

Yesterday, 14 April was Division 'S' International Speech and Table Topics Contest. Ronald represented Area S1 in the contest. It was held at AIA Changi. We had about 15 Cheng San Toastmasters who went to support him.

Ronald got 3rd in the table topics contest. Congratulations! Will post the pictures when I get it from the President. The trophy is nice though.

After the contest, we went to Annalakshami at Chinatown Point to have our dinner cum gathering. It's an Indian restaurant where we had buffet. After that you pay what you feel because the money is devoted to Indian Arts if I didn't get it wrong.

The next stop was a surprise! It was my birthday, so Kumar prepared a little surprise at Swensens with an ice-cream cake. Surprise surprise.

In all, it was a good day spent with fellow toastmasters. It has been a long time since we had a gathering like this. If you like the culture of our club, with people from all walks of life yet coming together to have fun while learning, then this is the place for you.

Sorry people, I see that this place is full of cobwebs.

So here am I to clear this place up a lil' bit. Well, let me explain, I've been really busy with school and every other thing hence, the neglection (if there's such a word.)

Things have been going well at Cheng San TMC, we ain't too far away from our 10/10 DCP and Ronald is gonna represent Area S1 in the Division 'S' International Speech & Table Topics Contest on 14 April 2007 at AIA Changi. Here are the pictures from the Area S1 contest...

Other than that, chapter meetings have been normal with exciting themes like 'Excite!' and I can't remember the rest.

The previous chapter meeting had a guest from Nigeria, he's a Toastmaster too! How cool. He said that it has been a totally different experience. We also had guests from Temasek Polytechnic Toastmasters Club. And ah hem...I was best speaker for that day. *Grin*

Recent chapter meeting

We had our chapter meeting on 13 December 2006.

Although not as noisy with those 'happy nuts' around,

We still had a good time.

Congratulations to Laurence who did his project 1 and won the best prepared speech ribbon!

Congratulations to Ronald for winning the best evaluation ribbon,

And Lani (Guest: member to be..heh heh) for again winning her 2nd ribbon!

As usual, the best time came during the table topics,

With Nathaniel as the language evaluator.

We had a small coffee session after that and that ended the day.

Hi all, our last session of our Public Speaking & Communication Workshop will be held this Saturday, 2nd December 2006. It's gonna reflect the atmosphere of our normal chapter meetings, which you will definitely enjoy.
